Toys from the 70’s
I’ve been on a quest to get my grandchildren to stop bringing their electronic games to our house when they come for a visit. It hasn’t been an easy task, but the more we introduce them to some of the games from our childhood the easier it gets. We didn’t have video games and iPhones to keep us busy when we were growing up, but what we did have were a good imagination and a few toys.
Our grandchildren have learned that the TV rarely comes on at our house, and old fashion fun starts with just a couple old toys from the 70’s. I have been having fun teaching my granddaughters some old time jump rope songs, and our grandson is the winning champ of Connect Four.
Since we live on a farm, and in the country, visits usually are centered on whatever project we are working on, but fun is always included. A break for a game of Wiffle ball or archery practice is always a big hit for our grandson, and checking on baby bunnies or having a tea party is a show stopper for our granddaughters.
I had so much fun reminiscing with my hubby about all the toys we played with as kids, and even more excited that many of them are still available today!
With Christmas right around the corner, I thought I would make a list of some of our favorite old toys from the 70’s.
I found most of them on Amazon and since I like to Christmas shop online and beat the crowds I thought I would share them with you.
Here is a list of some of our favorite 70’s toys:

I love this and remember of course all of those toys. I gave some of those to my little grandsons! Good post.
I had to laugh when I handed my grandson a Yo-Yo and he had no idea what to do with it. I didn’t think I would remember how to make it go but was so surprised it came right back to me…just like riding a bike!
I love all of these!! Many may go on my son’s Christmas list now. π
These look like a lot of fun Tracy. Favourite memories with family have been times where we have gathered around a card game like UNO or SPOONS and laughed and laughed and laughed.
We don’t do this very oftenβ¦ maybe we are due for a new game or two!
Adelaide I forgot about spoons! We always played spoons when we went camping and I forgot about how much fun we had playing that game! Thanks for the sweet memory!
Great walk down memory lane. Thank heaps.
I had a slinky when I was a kid and I so enjoyed playing with it. The children even like them now. Thanks for sharing these great ideas at Good Morning Mondays. Blessings
Great post, I remember so many of these toys!
Operation was one of our favorites π
My grandchildren play Operation every time they come over…I still am not very good at it, my five year old granddaughter always beats me!
I love classic toys and as a child of the 70’s and 80’s that era of toys is my favorite. My grandma had a large set of Fisher Price Little People for us to play with that we all loved. Another favorite were the toy Schleich Animals that my grandma got us, we would play zoo. Of course there was also always a stack of Golden Books. I look forward to being a grandma one day, I definitely plan on having classic toys for my grand-kids as well! π Fun post, great toy ideas! π
Thanks for bringing back memories! I liked playing with my toy horses when I wasn’t taking care of, or riding, my real horses! π The barrel of monkeys was one I remember my brother playing with. π
I remember playing with my YoYo for hours…when I wasn’t bust weeding the garden, cleaning the barn or helping my mother can in the kitchen! Sweet memories of a life that was so much simpler!
Love the post. My husband keeps saying the kids need ipads. I keep telling him they don’t, they need legos/lincoln logs/books/etc. So far, I’m “winning” the argument. π I’m not against computers or electronics, but all in moderation. I prefer them to not spend large amounts of time there. “Go use your imaginations!”
Last night I pulled out the game of Topple. The kids had never seen it, neither had my husband (who grew up elsewhere). It cost me a whole quarter at a yard sale but the kids loved it.
Rosie I agree..computers and electronics in moderation! That is a big reason I won’t allow my grandkids bring when they visit…I encourage them to use their imagination!
The game Operation always made me too nervous, but my sister & cousins loved it! Other favorites in our family were LiteBrite, Easy Bake Oven, and the Spirograph at Grandma’s house.
Grandma also had a set of wooden clown blocks that we loved. They were kind of odd shaped so that they inter-locked and the white one had “Bill-ding” printed across his chest. We spent hours building and toppling with these things.
I had a Spirograph and remember my sisters and I fighting over it:) It is funny what you remember when you start thinking of things you played with as a child!
This is great! Even though I’m a child of the 80’s, I played with a LOT of the toys on this list. I guess my parents new a good thing when they saw one;)
Thanks for sharing at the Homestead Blog Hop this week! π
I love what you are trying to achieve with less electronics! Thanks for sharing this lifestyle inspiration on the Art of Home-Making Mondays last week! π My favorite is still Connect 4! And we are big Chess and Scrabble players.
Connect 4 is big at our house and we even taught our 3 year-old granddaughter to pay and she can beat most of us on any given day!
This wonderful memory jogging post is being featured on my blog today as part of “Tuesdays with a Twist” blog hop: http://www.godsgrowinggarden.com/2014/11/time-to-link-up-tuesdays-with-twist_18.html
I think I had almost every toy on this list (except for the last 3) – I would have added an easy bake oven too.
Thanks so much
Angie
Thank you for the feature Angie I will go check it out!
I played with the slinky a lot when I was a child. Great post!
Visiting from frugal Friday link up party.
I remember all of those although cabbage patch dolls were a bit later. My favorite was jacks, I could play with them for hours. I am the same way with my grandchildren. Electronic games and television aren’t available here. In the nice weather their favorite activity is to swing on a rope hanging from the tree but there is also street hockey and other activities. Indoors we play cards, board games, dice games and read. There has been one positive from this, when the children go home they find they would rather play than watch television I’m told.
I would say you are teaching your grand kids some things they will always remember you for!
Fun article. We still have a few of those at the house but I might need to order a few more….
My old toys are some of my grand kids favorite toys!
One of my kids got a slinky recently and it was a big hit! They all love it.
