Homemade Ice Cream.
With three grandchildren around, I am all about making memories for them! One of those memories is Grandma’s old fashion homemade chocolate ice cream!
I remember as a little girl my parents had an old crank ice cream maker, ( I admit I use an electric ice cream maker these days) and when the summers grew hot and muggy we would spend a day making homemade ice cream. We lived near a dairy farm, so the supply of fresh cream was always available. Today, I am blessed to have a fellow homesteader who milks, and I am able to get fresh milk with heavy cream weekly.
I start this recipe the night before I want to serve this yummy dessert, but it is so worth the wait.
This old fashion ice cream recipe will be one you will want to save and pass on to your children’s families!

- 2 eggs, well beaten
- 1 cup sugar
- 2 1/2 cups milk
- 2 cups heavy cream
- 1/4 cup chocolate syrup
- 2 teaspoons vanilla
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- Combine eggs, sugar, and 1 cup of milk in a double boiler and cook until thickened, stirring frequently. Cool for 30 minutes and then cover and place in refrigerator for 8 hours or overnight.
- Once mixture has cooled for at least eight hours combine thickened milk, remaining 1 1/2 cups milk, heavy cream, vanilla, chocolate syrup, and salt in ice cream freezer container.
- Freeze according to your ice cream makers directions.

For some reason, I didn’t make ice cream at all this year! I’m going to have to fix that. Thanks for the recipe.
I made way too much ice cream this summer…but it was worth it!
Ice cream is one of my favorite from scratch treats! I used to go through a ton of store-bought, but now I know what the real stuff tastes like. I even made a black licorice flavored (anise) one before (hubby loves black licorice, but it is a like it or hate it kind of thing).
Anise flavored ice cream??? Wow I would have never thought of that what an interesting flavor:) No matter what the flavor homemade ice cream has no comparison to store bought and I make it every chance I get.
Wow, brings back memories! We used the old hand crank ice cream churn too. Everyone took turns with it! LOVE my electric one now. Your recipe sounds marvelous and I do love chocolate ice cream. Thanks for sharing with us!
This sounds so good- can’t wait to try it!
It only is as good as your raw milk…good thing I am blessed to live close by so my family can enjoy your hard work!
I love making homemade ice cream, we used to do it all the time with family in VA. I wanted to let you know I will be featuring it on this weeks Tuesday with a Twist link party on my blog, come by and say hello. Thanks again and have a great week. 🙂
Debra thank you so much for the feature I will stop by and check it out!
I found this post from the Frugal Friday Link Up Party. I love homemade chocolate ice-cream! Thanks for sharing this yummy recipe!
I’m a little confused, how much ice cream does this make? I have a 6qt ice cream maker, I’m thinking I need to double this recipe, but not sure.
Thanks for any help!
Jenny,
I only have a 2 quart ice cream maker so I would assume you would need to double this recipe for your 6 quart maker.
Is it possible to make the ice cream with all whole milk and not use the cream? With pre-diabetes and Afib I am limited on the fat I can eat.
Nina,
I have made this recipe with raw milk that had a good bit of cream in it, but have not tried it with straight whole milk. If you give it a try, please come back and let us know how it works out for you.
Thanks that was easy.
Wondered if you have some recipes that are not chocolate. I have Afib and IC bladder. Cannot have caffeine or chemical ingredients. Bananas, Pears, Blue Berries, and Apples are the fruit I can eat mainly.
Thanks
Nina
Nina,
You can leave the chocolate out of this recipe and it makes a great vanilla ice cream.
