Old Fashion Skin Care.
I smile each time I take a trip to the drug store and pass the isle that contains all those high priced health and beauty skin care products! I have learned over the years that everything I need for skin care the old fashion way can be found right in my kitchen, and I don’t need any of those overpriced harmful chemicals to take care of my skin.
I am a very simple country girl who does not wear much makeup, and am not prone to primping in the bathroom for hours on end, but I do like clean skin and make a point to keep it as healthy as I can.
Here are a few of my simple old fashion skin care tips:
- Sea salt makes a great mild abrasive and makes a wonderful body and facial scrub.
- A used tea bag works as an astringent to tone your skin.
- Honey and oatmeal combined clears away dead skin and leaves your face smooth and soft. Grind two tablespoons of rolled oats in a blender, and then add two tablespoons of honey to make a face wash.
- All you need is an egg to combat dry or oily skin. Egg yokes help dry skin, while the egg white helps with oily skin.
- Vegetable shortening makes a great hand moisturizer and works great to soften tough, dry heels. Rub shortening on your heels and put on a pair of socks before going to bed at night.
Do you have any tried and true old fashion skin care secrets you can share?

All great ideas! I use lemon juice if I get a blemish and it dries right up! Avocado is also very good for the skin.
I didn’t know about the avocado…what a great tip!
Wow! Those are some pretty simple everyday items to be used! Thanks for the tip!
Thanks for stopping by Joyful!
I did not know about egg yoke for dry skin! I don’t wear makeup either but I should be doing more for my skin. I’m 67 years old so I guess its time!
It just amazes me how many things we have in our homes to take care of our body that are right under our noses!
I believe totally in DIY skincare and the old fashioned way. Your have some good suggestions here. I use organic coconut oil on my skin and found it to be one of the best moisturizer that I have ever used. I also like to use raw honey & yogurt as a mask once or twice a week on my face. Thanks for sharing your ideas and I have twitted. Visiting from Home Acre Blog Hop!
Marla my friend uses coconut oil and she has beautiful skin!
I worked as an esthetician (skin care specialist) before we had kids, and I was addicted to a really nice professional skin care line. They did do a good job of keeping “junk” out of their products, but you wouldn’t believe what they charged for their daily exfoliant (main ingrdient: rice powder) and one of their masks (only ingredient:colloidal oatmeal–translation– oatmeal)! Now that I’m a stay at home mom, I make my own. I even make my own chapstick using coconut oil and beeswax.
Wow I didn’t know that! Thanks for sharing that with us. I make my own lip gloss as well, and I use beeswax, coconut oil and Vitamin E in mine.
Hi Tracy! I also use coconut oil 🙂 It has no smell but it’s wonderful for hand moisturizer… and I always have it in the house- the dogs get a tbsp every night to help keep their coats soft. I also use it for cooking 🙂
What a great to keep our dogs coat soft!
Awesome! I’m totally gonna try the honey and oatmeal! Thanks for linking up with us over at the #homematters link party! We hope to see you again this coming Wednesday 🙂
I never dreamed when I started this all-natural journey years ago I would be able to use so many things I already had on hand. What money I have saved from shopping in my kitchen for most of my health and beauty needs!
I’ll bet! I wasn’t sure if you had time to notice that you’ve been featured over at the #homematters linky party! You should check it out 🙂
Thanks Kristen…I will go check it out!
I like all the ideas here and have tried some of these. Chris from Joybilee Farm has some good recipes for DIY skin care. Her face mask is awesome.
I use olive oil at night to remove my makeup, even mascara. Even after removing everything with a warm washcloth, enough of the oil remains that I don’t have a need for additional moisturizer. Coconut oil is a nice hand cream.
I have had lots tell me they use olive oil on their face. I must give it a try!
I used to work for one of those high-priced department store lines and they sold a pricey exfoliant back in the eighties. It was cornmeal which you were supposed to mix with a little water to make a paste. They just put it in a cardboard shaker with a pretty wrapper, added some scent and sold it for many dollars.
