It happens every year about this time, and as always I am ready with my tired and true homemade sore throat soothers.
I don’t get sick much, but when I do it is usually a sore throat and I am always ready to whip up one of these homemade remedies. I have tried them all, and the one that works the best for me is the Honey and Apple Cider Vinegar recipe.
The next time you have a sore throat give one of these old-fashion sore throat soothers a try.
- Honey and Apple Cider Vinegar – Mix 1/4 cup of apple cider vinegar and 1/4 cup raw honey together and then take one tablespoon ever four hours as needed.
- Frozen Pop Ice – Try sucking on a frozen pop ice every couple hours. The cold ice will numb the soreness in your throat. This works best for kids.
- Cayenne Pepper – Add 1/2 teaspoon of cayenne pepper to 1 cup of boiling water; stir well and gargle while the mixture is very warm. This brings more circulation to the sore throat area and helps draws away any infection.
- Mustard – Grind on tablespoon of mustard seed and combine with the juice of half a lemon, one tablespoon of salt, one tablespoon of raw honey and 1 1/4 cups of boiling water. Let set covered for 15 minutes, and then use as a gargle.
- Warm Compress – Place a warm compress on your neck for 30 minutes every 2 hours.

Hello Tracy, I found your blog tonight when Pinterest sent me a suggested board on simple living. I noticed that you were from SC so I clicked over to see where you lived. My husband and I live near Florence, and we have been blogging for a few years about how we downsized and started living a more simple life. We used to live in Columbia, and have also lived in Mt. Pleasant, and I grew up in the upstate. Nice to meet you, and if I discover that I have a sore throat I will know where some remedies are!
How exciting….I love how I get to meet so many people right in my own back yard! I am going to go check out your website as well!
Love this Tracy – Thanks for the list. I don’t know if I could do the Cayenne Pepper one. 🙂 Thankfully we have been well this winter season, but I will keep this on hand just in case. Love for you to link up your post over at our new link up at Simplified Life.net! Have a blessed week! ~Victoria
Great recipes for dealing with sore throats – thanks so much 🙂
These are great! I had strep last year- which I had a million times as a kid, but as an adult, it’s one of the worst illnesses I’ve had. But anyway- at first I tried so many remedies- I did cinnamon & honey, warm Jell-O, ACV, salt water, etc etc- nothing helped. It was awful. I never heard of using mustard- I will definitely be writing that one down to try. I hate to even say this out loud but I have yet to be sick this season- but I’ll be ready when it happens ;). Thanks for this helpful article!

These are great recipes! I like using the natural ingredients best and I love it that I can make things from what I have in my house… seems we have to do this at least once a year. 🙂
Such great suggestions here! I wish I would have had this info a few weeks ago! I had a yucky sore throat that just didn’t want to go away. I ended up sipping on an herbal throat soothing tea, and using some cough drops! Will keep this in mind for next time!
