From hive to honey to hands with homemade beeswax hand lotion

Our bees have been busy making honey and filling our hive box with all-natural beeswax hand lotion. I have to say beekeeping is one of the most rewarding aspects of homesteading.

I remember the first time we pulled honey I didn’t render the wax correctly and ruined the whole batch!  So this weekend I begged hubby to go and pull me just a little wax so I could try it the correct way. After lots of research and of course some trial and error I finally got it down.  I was so nervous that I was going to ruin the fresh beeswax again I forgot to take pictures of how to actually clean the wax.  I will make sure I have my camera handy the next time and explain that process, but for now let me show, you how the lotion turned out.

After I gathered all the ingredients I started the very simple process of making homemade beeswax hand lotion.

  • 1/2 cup olive oil
  • 1/4 cup coconut oil
  • 1/4 cup cleaned beeswax
  • 1/4 teaspoon Vitamin E oil
  • 10 drops of your chosen essential oil (optional)

In a small jar (I used a recycled candle jar) mix the olive oil, coconut oil, and beeswax. Put your jar into a saucepan and fill the saucepan with water until it comes 1/2 way up the jar, being careful not to get water into the oil mixture. Put on the stove over medium/low heat. Heat and stir until melted.

Once the wax mixture is completely melted remove from pan and let sit until mixture is room temperature.  With a wooden spoon (that you won’t want to use again) stir every 15 minutes. Once the mixture drops to room temperature, stir in the Vitamin E oil and essential oil.

I cannot believe how simple this was!

Totally organic and free from all those unknown chemicals. The possibilities are endless and I will be anxiously awaiting more wax to try something else.  I wonder what I should try next?
