Growing up in Pennsylvania fresh mint grew everywhere.   In ditches alongside the road, in gardens, in pots and always in the kitchen gardens of the neighboring  Amish women.

How to make Amish Meadow Tea

The smell still has a way of taking me back to the days of riding my bike on our  dirt road while jumping off and standing on the side as a buggy or car went by.

Even now, 40 years later, the smell and the taste of meadow tea still puts a smile on my face.   It’s all natural, has no caffeine and is the perfect drink any time of the year.

It’s easy to make and you can use any type of fresh mint growing in your garden, or what you buy in the produce section of your favorite grocer.]

How to make Amish Meadow Tea:

  • Boil one gallon of water in a stock pot and remove from heat once the water boils.
  • Drop four large handfuls of fresh, clean mint leave into hot water and let sit for 1 hour.
  • Heat 1 cup of water and 1 cup of sugar in a small saucepan until sugar is dissolved.
  • Strain mint leaves from water and stir in sugar mixture.
  • Chill and serve over ice cubes.

A simple refreshing drink, hot or cold, that will bring the smell and taste of your garden in your kitchen.

Hint: Freeze an ice cube tray full of meadow tea before serving so your drink doesn’t get watered down by the ice cubes.
